How to take care of your Plumbing Pipes during these extreme temperatures

There is a common misconception on how to prevent a plumbing disaster during these extreme temperatures. From letting the water run, to insulating your exterior pipes, and faucets, Southeast Texans have tried it all. Simply, our Homes are not made to withstand such extreme temperatures.

One advice that a lot of Homeowners never hear is to shut off your water from the main drain valve. This is something that is very simple to do and will prevent your pipes from bursting and/or clogging up. You simply shut off the main valve before going to sleep (usually when temperatures dip) and once temperature goes above freezing you simply turn it back on.

The steps to are:

1. Fill all bathtubs with water. This will be useful to flush toilets.

2. Take showers at night before going to bed.

3. Shut off main valve before going to bed.

4. Turn on valve once everything warms up and temperatures are above 32 degrees F.

This process is a no-brainer and will save and upkeep your plumbing pipes through these extreme low temperatures.
